Need More Space to Grow?
As a family grows, so does its needs: another bedroom for another child; accommodations for an aging or ailing relative; extra space for a newly-acquired hobby. Sometimes a home is purchased with the full intent to add on extra rooms simply because the property is too beautiful to pass up. Home additions are often the answer when seeking solutions to a cramped living space.
Regardless of your reason for seeking information about residential home additions, ‘adding on’ to your current home may offer a perfect solution. From a cost perspective, too, additions offer an advantage: the cost to add a room is low in comparison to the cost of selling your existing home and moving to a larger one.
An additional benefit to adding a room or rooms to your current home is a customization. When you build an addition to your home, you are able to customize the addition selecting the interior design, layout, wall and floor coverings, etc. The addition will reflect you and meet or exceed your expectations in terms of amenities.
In general, a homeowner goes through the same process as building a home from scratch when constructing an addition to an existing home. Building plans and permits are needed and a general contractor is necessary to handle your project.
First Steps – Property Boundaries
Your property’s boundaries and your town’s ordinances may or may not impact your residential addition; therefore, it is extremely important to research, review, and assess the potential impact. A homeowner should pay particular attention to the following:
- Property boundaries and the amount of setback footage required by your town.
- The location of your well, if applicable, since generally there are ordinances that specify how close a structure can be in relation to the well.
- The location of your septic tank and leach field – again, certain restrictions may apply.
- The utility easements, draining requirements, and the location of underground utilities.
While you can pursue the above independently, Batch Building is extremely knowledgeable in these areas and has the ability to work through these issues on your behalf. Batch Building has been constructing home additions in the High Bridge, NJ area for more than 30 years. This sunroom addition (shown here) is just one example of their work.
